Background of the study
Digital communication in Nigeria is marked by a trend toward syntactic simplification, a phenomenon driven by the need for brevity and efficiency. This study examines how syntactic simplification manifests in two distinct digital media: SMS and email. SMS communication often features highly abbreviated structures, reduced clause complexity, and non-standard punctuation, while email—despite its formal context—also shows signs of simplification, albeit to a lesser degree (Ogunleye, 2023). By comparing syntactic features across these two modalities, the research investigates how digital constraints and the immediacy of communication lead to deviations from traditional grammatical norms. The study employs corpus analysis of text messages and emails from Nigerian users, identifying patterns of syntactic reduction and assessing their impact on clarity and message delivery. It further explores how such simplification affects user interpretation and the overall effectiveness of digital communication. This investigation is crucial for understanding language evolution in the digital era and for developing strategies to improve digital literacy and communication standards (Afolabi, 2024; Chinonso, 2025).
Statement of the problem
While syntactic simplification is evident in Nigerian digital communication, little comparative research has been conducted on its effects in SMS versus email. The lack of systematic analysis hampers our understanding of how simplification impacts communication clarity and efficiency across different digital platforms, posing challenges for language education and technology design (Ogunleye, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
1. To compare syntactic structures in SMS and email communications.
2. To assess the effects of syntactic simplification on message clarity.
3. To propose strategies for maintaining effective digital communication.
Research questions:
1. What syntactic features characterize SMS and email texts?
2. How does simplification affect comprehension?
3. What measures can improve digital communication clarity?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of syntactic simplification in digital communication, offering valuable insights for educators, linguists, and technologists. The findings will contribute to improved digital literacy and communication strategies in Nigeria (Chinonso, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to SMS and email communications in Nigeria and does not include other digital formats.
Definitions of terms:
1. Syntactic Simplification: The reduction of sentence complexity.
2. SMS: Short Message Service used for text messaging.
3. Email: Electronic mail communication.
